Skip to Order Your Domain Name

The explosive growth of the World Wide Web has made it a business imperative for many organizations to include the Internet in their business plans. This is intended as a very brief introduction to Domain Names and associated terms. By its very nature, the explanation is a little simplistic, but we believe that by providing this to you, you will be better informed as to your choices. FACCS can provide all the services mentioned here.

When you have a Domain Name, then there are a number of benefits that occur, the principal one of which is that you promote your business more every time you send an email, send a brochure, or use your letterhead.

Which do you think is better out of the following choices? 1? 2?

1. beeznees@ozeeweb.net.au OR http://www.ozeeweb.net.au/beeznees
2. sales@beeznees.com.au OR http:///www.beeznees.com.au

Domain Name Registration is just that. Registering the Domain Name so that it is available to you when you want it. This has a set up charge and an ongoing fee, for some reason usually paid every 2 years.

Domain Name Delegation is actually linking that Domain Name to a computer that in turn is linked to the World Wide Web and other Internet facilities. Web Hosting is simply storing your Web based marketing material on a computer somewhere and making this information available to anyone who is connected to the Internet and knows the address of your data on the specific computer. This address is called the URL (Universal Resource Locator). There is a set up fee to do this, and an ongoing fee for storing your site, and usually a fee for data traffic over a certain volume per month.

The various suffixes to the right of your domain name (beeznees) have a meaning. The last part (.au) signifies the country where your Domain Name is delegated. It may be a bit confusing, but this does NOT have to be where the actual computer is located. If there is no final suffix in the address (URL), then the country is in the USA.

The next part to the right is the function of the domain "type". .com usually means "Commercial", .org means "Organisation" generally a charity or sporting body; .gov means "Government", .net was originally reserved for organizations operating a telecommunications network although this is starting to change.

If you want your site visitors to know that your business is operating in Australia, then you would probably use the .com.au domain. There are quite a few rules about this, the most significant of which is that your domain name must be closely related to your business or company name.

If on the other hand, for some reason you want to give the impression that you are an international company operating all over the world, then you might use the .com, or the .net domains. There are risks associated with this, not the least of which is that you need to manage carefully any prices mentioned on your site.
